Two men, one from Llangennech, the other from Llywnhendy are assisting South Wales Sea Fisheries Committee with their enquires following the seizure of a fixed net from downstream of the Loughor Bridges.
On Tuesday 8th July Fishery Officers observed the two men clearing fish from the 30 metre net set near the confluence of the Lliw and Loughor rivers during a surveillance operation mounted in the area. Inspected as they regained the shore, the men had a quantity of sea fish including bass, mullet and flounder which were also seized.
Although stake netting is allowed in the estuary, nets must not fish above 1.25 metres above the sea bed as this one did, to prevent the capture of salmon and seatrout. Would be netsmen are advised to contact the Sea Fisheries Committee on www.swsfc.org.uk to check byelaws before fishing. Contravention of regulations may cost a £5000 fine.
A spokesman for the Committee said ‘Fishery Officers continue to mount patrols to prevent this type of illegal netting and frustrate the activities of drift net poachers operating in the lower reaches of the estuary. Our seagoing patrols are ensuring that drift netting is excluded from the sensitive estuary areas where fish are vulnerable’. |
