MUSSEL GATHERING SUSPENDED AT ST. ISHMAELS Mussel gathering in the Gwendraeth and Tywi estuaries will be suspended from 22 December 2006 by the South Wales Sea Fisheries Committee to allow the shellfish to grow to marketable size.
Mussel beds at Salmon Scar have provided a mussel fishery for some considerable time but a recent survey by the Committee’s Conservation Officers has revealed a predominance of juveniles below the 51mm minimum size and erosion to the bed caused by recent gales and high tides. The temporary closure which will last until 31 March 2006 is enforced by Byelaw and may attract a fine of up to £5000 for a contravention.
Small scale, hand only collection of mussel may still continue provided they are carried to the high water mark without the use of a vehicle.
Notices have been posted in the vicinity of the mussel bed.
