RAY TAGGING PROGRAMME

Since June 2007 The South Wales Sea Fisheries Committee, in conjunction with the University of Wales Swansea, have been conducting a ray tagging programme.
0in the Bristol Channel.

 Aims and Objectives
The primary objective of this project is to gain some insight into the migration patterns of juvenile rays from known or suspected inshore nursery areas in the Bristol Channel. To achieve this we are aiming to tag large numbers of juvenile rays of all species collected from some of these sites.

Adult rays will also be tagged when possible during the project to provide additional information on adult ray population dynamics.

Implementation
Juvenile and adult rays collected using an otter trawl on board the UWS research vessel, the R.V. Noctiluca, are tagged externally with either a T-bar Anchor Tag or a Plastic Tipped Dart Tag, and then released. All of the tags are very similar, red or yellow and show a unique 5 digit identification code (e.g. T0001 or P0001) and a UWS telephone number.

(see link to poster below).

The species, nose to tail length, wing width, sex and condition of each individual fish will be recorded during the short time it is captive on the research vessel.

In the event of recovering a tagged ray please make a note of the code printed on the tag along with the date and location and phone the Swansea University number on 01792 295361 or 295359 to pass on the information. Alternatively please email joswsfc@aol.com
with any information or to request an Information Return Pack.
