MONITORING

Lobster Tagging and Monitoring Project in South Wales

As part of South Wales Sea Fisheries Committees EU/WAG funded lobster V‑notching program we are monitoring the movements of lobsters between areas and studying their migration patterns.

V-notched lobsters are being marked with coloured elastic bands that are specific to different areas of the SWSFC district (see map).  Bands are either blue or white and are placed beyond the claws. In addition to helping fishermen to sort V-notched lobsters from their catch this helps us assess the extent of lobster movement between areas in the district.  Recently it has become apparent that banded lobsters are being found in adjacent areas and we are very interested in recording these, so if you find a lobster from outside of your area please let us know either on the form below or as a comment on your standard monthly catch returns.

In addition to the bands a number of lobsters have been tagged with variously coloured streamer tags through the fleshy undersides (see photo).  This study of up to 1000 lobsters will enable us to assess the aspects of the biology, ecology and strength of our lobster stock.  The printed code will be 7 digit e.g. 'SWSFC001'.

In the event that tagged lobster (or banded lobster from outside your area) is caught can you please make a note of any code with the date and location (GPS Latitude and Longitude) on the form provided / monthly return  or alternatively phone the SWSFC office on 01792 654466 or email andyswsfc@aol.com.

Reports of the findings will be displayed on the Committees website www.swsfc.org.uk  V-notching
Many thanks.
